FITIS brings biggest delegation to represent Sri Lanka

APICTA (Asia Pacific Information and Communication Technology Alliance) conducts an annual international awards program with the objective of increasing information and communication technology (ICT) awareness in the community and assist in bridging the digital divide. By providing networking and product benchmarking opportunities to ICT innovators and entrepreneurs in the region, the program is designed to stimulate ICT innovation and creativity, promote economic and trade relations, facilitate technology transfer, and offer business matching opportunities via exposure to venture capitalists and investors. Its 17 member economies include Australia, Brunei Darussalam, China, Hong Kong SAR, India, Indonesia, Macau SAR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taipei, Thailand and Vietnam.

This year the Federation of IT Industry Sri Lanka (FITIS) brought a delegation of 52 people including, Judges, Ex Co Members and Nominees with Shanta R Yapa, President, and FITIS Software Chapter as the head of the delegation. It was the biggest ever delegation Sri Lanka brought for APICTA. BCS – Sri Lanka Section along with FITIS jointly represented Sri Lanka at APICTA.

Participation in APICTA which is a truly an international competition will certainly help local software professionals to improve their capabilities in designing, developing and commercializing ICT solutions said Shanta R Yapa, President of FITIS Software Chapter. This offers them an opportunity to benchmark against regionally best innovations and the exposure our participants gained will certainly be beneficial to the industry he ,added.

FITIS Sponsored 3 students who were the Winners of Young Computer Scientist Competition 2013 to represent Sri Lanka at APICTA 2013 and 2 students namely Raashid Ahamed of Baduriya Central Collage, Mawanella and Dushan Chanuka of Ananda Collage, Colombo won merit awards.

In total, Sri Lanka also Sri Lanka won 6 merit awards including the ICT industry categories that included .Zone 24/7 for the Research and Development Category ,Raashid Ahamed of Baduriya Central Collage, Mawanella and Dushan Chanuka from Ananda Collage, Colombo for the Secondary School Projects Category, P. A Arachchi, Mithra Mayadunne and Ganindu Nanayakkara of the Sri Lanka Institute of IT (SUIT) and Kalindu Priyadarshana of the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) for the Tertiary Students Projects category.

APICTA 2013 was organized by the Hong Kong Computer Society and was held in Hong Kong from 24-27 Nov 2013 at Cyber port the Hong Kong exhibition and Convention Center.
